Safety Monitoring for Aerial Work Platforms

For an aerial work platform, a two-stage tilt monitoring system was required to detect and compensate for dangerous oscillations of the work baskets.

The monitoring should occur in two steps:

For tilt deviations > 5° N from the horizontal, a switching signal from the tilt switch should be triggered, distinguishing between left or right deviation. Hydraulic actuators should restore the horizontal position of the work basket.
For tilt deviations of the work basket > 10° N to the left or right, a warning and shutdown of the aerial work platform should occur.
Solution: For the control of the work platform, the switching point and hysteresis of the standard switch HNSC-A-UNS-DC were adjusted according to the requirements. One switch is used for control in case of left or right deviations. For the shutdown of the system, the standard switch HNSC-A-LM-DC was adjusted to open the output signal at 10°.

Automatic Goods Transport for Hospitals

For an automatic transport system for hospitals, a tilt switch was needed to detect the transition of transport baskets from the horizontal to the vertical position. The transition from horizontal to vertical movement (and vice versa) should be detected regardless of the direction of travel (right/left/upward/downward).

Solution: To meet the application requirements, a customized variant of the tilt switch HNSC-A-LM-DC with a switching angle of +/- 45° tilt was implemented.

Maintenance Cabin for Wind Turbines

To monitor a dangerous tilt of a maintenance cabin for wind turbines, a tilt switch was required. The tilt switch must reliably switch when a certain tilt angle is exceeded and must also be insensitive to disturbances and vibrations. The tilt switch must meet strict criteria regarding service life and failure probability to ensure the required safety in the application.

Solution: To meet the requirements for switching accuracy and sensitivity of the application, the mechatronic tilt measuring element of the tilt switch HNS-A-NM-DC was adjusted. To ensure the required properties of the switch regarding service life and failure probability, suitable test criteria were developed in collaboration with TÜV Süd, and the derived tests were conducted.
